Lexmark teams with Microsoft to enrich the end user experience for printing and print management

Johannesburg, 24 Jul 1998

Venture Computer, the sole distributor in South Africa for Lexmark International, Inc. today announced software that makes Internet printing easier for Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2 users, reduces network traffic and provides real-time printer status information

Lexmark customers will enjoy the key advantages of the Lexmark alert-based architecture which provides printer status information immediately as it occurs instead of having to check constantly for status information. Lexmark`s solution also minimises network traffic. This reduces costs, network bottlenecks and I/S support staff interventions.

Lexmark is the first printer manufacturer to deliver Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2-compatible print server software, which implements the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). Lexmark worked closely with Microsoft to ensure their IPP support worked with the upcoming Beta 2 version of Windows NT 5.0.

"Lexmark continues to strengthen its position as the open standards champion by teaming with Microsoft to provide this IPP solution," said Richard Fearon, sales and marketing director at Venture Computer. "Because of the strategic importance of Windows NT 5.0 to our customers, Lexmark continues to focus on working with Microsoft to provide tight integration of our printing and printer management solutions."

The Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) is a proposed standard to develop a platform-independent and interoperable protocol to provide distributed printing across the Internet. Such a standard is consistent with Lexmark`s vision of the digital office and the "distribute and print" model of on-demand printing.

Lexmark is now the first printer company to deliver Internet printer management software for both Microsoft Windows NT 5.0 Beta 1 and Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2. Lexmark also worked closely with Microsoft while developing a version of its award-winning MarkVision(TM) printer management software which is customised for the Microsoft Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2 operating system.
