Lexmark International SA today announced that it has embarked upon an initiative to support Cotlands Baby Sanctuary through its cartridge recycling initiative, called CRIB (Cotlands Recycling Initiative for Babies).
"As SA`s newest baby in the printing world, it is fitting that as part of our parent`s global environmental concern, that we align ourselves with a project that is appropriate both in this regard and additionally contributes towards the social needs of our local community," commented Mark Hiller, MD of Lexmark International SA. "We will finance "Baby Days" for the Cotlands Baby Sanctuary via a contribution based upon returned cartridges from both businesses and individuals, and our aim is to accumulate 5 000 "Baby Days" in 2002."
Inkjet cartridges can be sent back to Lexmark via a pre-paid envelope found in each new cartridge box. Laser toners are also being collected via bins placed in corporations across the country.
These cartridges and toners will be recycled or responsibly destroyed to protect the environment. With over half a million cartridges introduced each year, failure to undertake a properly managed and fully controlled destruction of cartridges equates to the dumping of over 1 000 cubic metres and 60+ tons of toxic waste. Lexmark believes that this is an opportunity to make a difference.
