LG 12.1-inch widescreen super-slim notebook, TX EXPRESS, addresses thermal problems with CNT technology

Johannesburg, 10 Apr 2006

The global and regional electronics leader in IT devices, LG Electronics, has announced that its super-slim notebook, the TX EXPRESS, addresses thermal problems using Carbon Nano Tube (CNT) technology, the most advanced heat solution for notebook PCs.

Compared to desktops, notebook PCs are compact devices and don`t carry large-sized heat sinks and fans as robust as a desktops. Notebooks typically have restrictive options for adopting high performance components, such as central processing units (CPUs), with high clock speeds and discrete graphics cards.

Due to the thermal issue, thickness and performance are a trade-off. To make the main body of a notebook PC slim, the graphics card should be shared to generate less heating.

If a notebook PC is equipped with a high-performance discrete graphics chipset, its thickness and weight should be increased for sufficient heat release. With the TX EXPRESS, LG Electronics breaks these unwritten rules.

The TX EXPRESS, weighing 1.1kg, is a sub-notebook with an independent graphics card and yet, remains stable against heat. After working with Korea`s Institute of Advanced Aerospace Technology, LG Electronics developed a cooling system using CNT technology. The cooling fan of the TX EXPRESS is coated with Carbon Nano Tubes, which tests show decreases the heat by more than 10%, compared to ordinary notebook PCs, thus reducing the CPU`s heating and graphics cards by 2-3 degrees Celsius.

LG Electronics` IT National Sales Manager, Shaun Michell, said: "Amidst today`s proliferation of super-slim notebook PCs, heating problems have surfaced as an urgent issue that needs to be addressed. Through our TX EXPRESS with CNT technology, we`ve proved to be the leader in addressing the notebook PC thermal problems."
