LG-Ericsson venture ripens
A networking joint venture formed out of a series of deals over the past several years is ready to take off in the US under the name LG-Ericsson USA, says PC World.
LG-Ericsson USA plans to offer small and medium-sized businesses a combination of LAN and phone gear that includes large-enterprise features, according to Tony Stramandinoli, vice president of marketing.
The new company brings together data LAN equipment from SMC Networks with enterprise telephony products from a South Korean venture between LG and Nortel Networks.
Verizon in speedy fibre-optic trial
Verizon said a fibre-optic field trial it conducted in June for a business customer in Taunton, Massachusetts, delivered near gigabit-per-second speeds, Computerworld writes.
The customer received 925Mbit per second throughput to a server at its business location from a Verizon central office less than two miles away, Verizon officials said.
Verizon has reached higher speeds in laboratory tests using the gigabit passive optical network switches.
Seagate new unveils home storage drive
Seagate has unveiled a new home network storage drive that can centrally store, access and continuously back up files wirelessly from Windows and Mac computers on the network, according to Smartoffice.
The GoFlex Home storage system is available in 1TB and 2TB capacities and allows a user to wirelessly stream photos, movies and music to most network connected DLNA devices.
