LG launches 1.3 megapixel camera phone, with true digital camera functionality

Johannesburg, 22 Apr 2005

LG Electronics has identified the need to have a camera in a cellular phone that offers one the same user experience, as one would have with a standalone digital camera. As such, it has incorporated a 1.3 megapixel camera into the new T5100 mobile phone.

LG`s T5100 is a dual-screen, rotating clamshell style phone featuring an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera with flash functionality and video recording. Compact in design (98mm X 48mm 26mm), the T5100 boasts a large 262 000-colour internal screen and a 65 536-colour external screen. The integrated MP3 player allows music files, stored on the phone`s internal memory, to be played through the phone`s loudspeaker or an attached stereo headset. The handset also features MMS and multimedia functions, like video recording/playback and voice dialling, all stored on the phones 32MB of internal memory. You are now able to capture moving and still images, listen to MP3 tracks and surf the Web using the Java browser.

With its built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, the T5100 enables you to capture those special moments by simply activating the viewfinder, before snapping away. LG`s designer integrated a high quality camera to match both the performance and expectations of consumers that demand this. As a result, the T5100 makes itself a competitor in the compact digital camera market and for many buyers the T5100 will become a real alternative, especially since its range of functions go far beyond those of a digital camera.

"Our initial success in the mobile phone market has been activated by the brand equity that LG currently enjoys in other product categories, as well as the cutting-edge technology which LG handsets offer," says Kevin Lee, Product Manager for LG Mobile.

In addition to the camera, the T5100 has all the features one would expect from a top-end phone. These include a built-in flash, PC synchronisation software, 40 polyphonic ringtones, WAP v2.0, animated graphics, caller group identification, a large 176x220 pixel 262K colour TFT screen and 200 hours standby battery life.

"Through realising that people are using their camera phones more frequently, we have introduced more camera functionality, like a rotating screen and viewfinder, MP3 playback and simpler menus, that allow you to send picture messages promptly," continued Lee.

"Leading industry analyst Gartner predicts that nearly 70% of all mobile phones sold will have a built-in camera by 2008. With its 1.3 megapixel camera, the T5100 is well equipped to harness this growth, consolidating LG`s reputation as the innovation leader in handset design and functionality," Lee concludes.
