LG looks to capture Middle East

LG Electronics is looking at capturing 15% of the smartphone market share in Oman, in the Middle East, reports TMCnet.

The company, which sold more than 120 million handsets worldwide last year, expects to cash in on the emerging global trend of convergence of display, mobile computing and communication.

The mobile business of LG is expected to see a growth of 35% during the current year as the region contributes 7% to the company's global sales.

World of Warcraft runs on iPad

Private Beta game streaming service Gakai has demonstrated how popular multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft can run on the Apple iPad, says Techtree.

The game was streamed over WiFi to the iPad tablet using Gakai's streaming technology.

Gakai CEO and co-founder, David Perry, showed how Gakai offers streaming services that work through the browser and allow any application or game to run on it.

Rise in smartphone sales

Worldwide sales of mobile phones grew by 21.7% in the first quarter versus the same period last year, thanks to the smartphone boost, according to the latest from IDC, states Universal Broadcasting News.

Nokia remained at the top of the standings, with 107.8 million units sold, up 15.7%, and a market share of 36.6%.

RIM sold 10.6 million phones, 45.2% more than the same period of 2009, reaching a market share of 3.6%.
