LG notebooks fully compliant with Europe`s environment-friendly regulations

Johannesburg, 16 May 2006

LG Electronics, the global electronics leader in IT devices, has announced that LG notebook PCs are 100% compliant to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

Starting on 1 July 2006, the European Union will ban the sale of electronic products containing hazardous substances such as lead (Pb), mercury, cadmium and chromium VI (known as hexavalent chromium).

Amid the strengthening environmental regulations, and the growing international demand for environment-friendly products, LG Electronics has drawn the industry`s attention by taking a step ahead of others.

LG Electronics established its own environment-friendly committee in 2003. This committee undertook to verify basic conditions for the development of environment-friendly products and develop related technologies.

In March 2005, the company implemented its Green Programme that gives environment-friendly company accreditation to its partner firms. The Green Programme is systematically designed to keep and manage environment-friendly quality, beginning with suppliers of products, parts, raw and supplementary materials in order to meet and fully comply with the terms of the regulations on hazardous substances.

These efforts started to bear fruit in June 2005, when LG Electronics unveiled the LW60, the world`s first environment-friendly notebook to meet the RoHS directive.

With its LW60 earning an environment-friendly accreditation, LG Electronics has been implementing environment-friendly manufacturing processes and developing all new models into environment-friendly products.

Starting in January 2006, LG PCs have been 100% compliant to the RoHS directive, thereby becoming the first notebook PC maker to respond to the European Union`s environmental regulations that will be fully enforced on 1 July 2006.

Shaun Michell, IT National Sales Manager, said: "By proactively responding to the environmental regulations, we can take initiatives in establishing our environmental regulations. In fact, we have taken a favourable position in erecting a technological entry barrier with our preoccupied environment-friendly technologies. We can reduce the amount of hazardous substances used in our products, reduce noise and enhance power-saving functions, thereby greatly contributing to consumer benefits."
