LG Electronics is gearing up for the mass roll-out of three Windows smartphones in the next few weeks.

According to the tech company, the releases form part of LG's plans to aggressively grow its share of the global smartphone market.

LG says this will ultimately result in 13 new LG-branded Windows phones to be unveiled worldwide before the end of the year.

Todd Peters, Microsoft corporate vice-president, says: “With familiar software like Microsoft Outlook, Windows Media Player and Windows Live, these phones will give people the confidence to get things done with the software they would normally expect from their PCs.”

An LG statement notes the three mobile handsets will be targeted at different segments of the market; ranging from premium to affordable, and will include the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. The LG GM 750, equipped with a qwerty keyboard, is one of the first devices LG will release.

The latest version of Windows Mobile includes an upgraded Internet Explorer Mobile browser with a customised version of Adobe Flash Lite. Windows Mobile 6.5 will also include free access to Microsoft's My Phone service, allowing customers to perform automatic backups of photos, music, contacts and text messages from their handheld to the Internet.

Like its rival Apple, LG says it will drive the LG Application Store, which will offer add-ons for LG devices as well as future LG smartphones. The site expects to offer up to 2 000 applications by the end of 2010.
