LG hopes to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note with the new five-inch smartphone/tablet, the Optimus Vu.
A release from LG states the Optimus Vu will feature LTE and IPS technology, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GB memory and an eight-megapixel rear-facing camera (and 1.3MP front-facing camera). The 'phablet' will run the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. LG says an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is in the works.
LG is touting the device as a “multimedia lover's dream”, saying its 4:3 aspect ratio makes for comfortable viewing of documents, books, Web pages and video.
President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications, Jong-seok Park, says the Optimus Vu is the result of combining the company's best technology with customer needs.
“The Optimus Vu was designed to maximise what customers could do with a smartphone.”
The handset features a dedicated “QuickClip” hotkey, which allows for the capturing of screenshots. Also like the Galaxy Note, the Optimus Vu has a stylus, or what LG calls the “Rubberdium pen”.
LG claims the Optimus Vu is the slimmest of all LTE phones currently available, measuring in at 8.5mm. The handset is set to go on sale in Korea in March, and will formally make its international debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of this month.
