Symantec today announced it has been appointed by three government departments in Limpopo Province to provide a range of Internet security solutions to protect against malicious cyber threats.
The Limpopo departments of education, transport and local government have selected Symantec solutions including Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition, Symantec Web Security with filtering, Symantec VPN and Symantec VelociRaptor.
Thabiso New Technologies (TNT), a Symantec Enterprise Solutions Partner, has been appointed to conduct the installation and deployment programme.
Government departments throughout SA rely on a wide area network (WAN) to share data using multiple platforms. The WAN is complex with areas that are open to the public and other areas to which access is tightly controlled. As TNT managing director Bertus van den Heever explains, such a network environment is potentially vulnerable to cyber attack unless effective Internet security technology and policies are put in place.
"Departments within the government realise the need to protect against external and internal attempts to exploit security vulnerabilities," he says.
Patrick Evans, Symantec's Africa regional manager, adds: "The government departments have recognised that modern blended cyber threats can only be countered by highly manageable and flexible integrated security solutions. Protecting a network is no longer a question of simply installing anti-virus software."
Symantec and TNT conducted a series of pilot studies to enable the government departments to assess the performance of the Symantec solutions before committing to full roll out of the technology. Department IT managers also met with Symantec and TNT security specialists to better understand Symantec's integrated security strategy.
The Symantec VelociRaptor firewall/VPN appliance provides easy-to-manage enterprise-class security and superior data throughput for networks of all sizes, protecting the Internet gateway and subnets of corporate LANs and WANs. To provide industry-leading protection and manageability, it incorporates award-winning Symantec Enterprise Firewall/VPN technologies, including application proxies and continuous system hardening, and a GUI-based console that enables the appliance or distributed appliances at any location to be locally or remotely configured and managed. To accommodate different network sizes and data throughput requirements, Symantec VelociRaptor is offered in two plug-and-protect models, each of which can be clustered via an integrated high-availability/load-balancing option to accommodate high-volume sites.
Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition
Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition delivers multi-tiered enterprise protection at the gateway, network server, and workstation. By incorporating award-winning NAVEX scan engine technology at every network tier, Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition eliminates the complexity of building a multi-vendor security solution. Through the Symantec System Center central management console, IT managers can easily deploy, manage and lock down policies to keep network servers and workstations up-to-date and protected-enterprise-wide and across multiple platforms.
In addition, administrators can audit the network via the central management console to determine which nodes are unprotected and vulnerable to virus attacks. The suite's high-performance, scalable protection stops virus threats before they enter the network, and enables administrators to block unwanted email content like spam. And Symantec's global response infrastructure ensures superior service and support.
Symantec Web Security
Symantec Web Security protects HTTP/FTP traffic with scalable, high-performance, one-time scanning using leading anti-virus and content filtering technologies. It is the only solution that integrates list-based and heuristic, context-sensitive analyses in a single-vendor solution for protecting the web gateway from viruses and unsuitable content. Symantec researches, develops and supports its own international URL filtering lists as well as market-leading protection technologies, including NAVEX, Bloodhound, and its patented, multilingual Dynamic Document Review for content analysis. Centralised policy management and secure, built-in support for external directory services, including LDAP and NT Users/Groups, provide simple, flexible administration of multiple users, groups, and servers.
