Linux turns mobile

A version of the increasingly popular Linux operating system, Ubuntu, will be developed for use on Net-enabled phones and devices, reports BBC News.

The Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project aims to create the open source platform, for initial release in October 2007.

"It is clear that new types of devices - small, handheld, graphical tablets which are -enabled - are going to change the way we communicate and collaborate," said Ubuntu CTO Matt Zimmerman.

Microsoft fixes DNS

Microsoft has released its May set of patches, fixing critical bugs in Windows, Office and Exchange, reports Computer World.

Seven groups of patches were released yesterday, fixing a total of 19 bugs. Microsoft rates all seven of the updates as critical, but security experts said IT administrators should be particularly concerned with the MS07-026 and MS07-029 updates, which fix flaws in Exchange and the Windows DNS (Domain Name System) server.

The DNS flaw "stands as the number one issue" this month, according to Amol Sarwate, manager of Qualys' vulnerability research lab.

Sun with Ericsson

Sun is partnering with Ericsson to support development of Java-based server applications that run on wireless networks, reports PC World.

The announcement, made at the JavaOne 2007 conference on Tuesday, says Sun and Ericsson will contribute to the GlassFish open source community, a group devoted to developing server applications based on the Java Enterprise Edition platform.

Ericsson will contribute parts of its server development to GlassFish, including a variety of tools and expertise to support developer communities.
