Eight youth leaders from Soweto and Daveyton Computer Clubhouses were chosen to attend a worldwide teen summit in Boston, Massachusetts, from 27 July.
Intel says the selected leaders will join nearly 300 other young people from 20 countries for the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network's 2010 Teen Summit.
The theme of the summit is 'Mobilise, Act, Inspire'. “They will share ideas, learn new skills, and work together on projects that address socially-conscious challenges such as reducing urban violence and improving the environment,” says Intel.
The eight South African youth ambassadors participating in the summit range in age from 13 to 30 and were chosen for their outstanding peer leadership and efforts to give back to their communities.
“I'm looking forward to learning about new software and networking with other coordinators,” says Skhubmuzo Ngobese, coordinator at a Daveyton Intel Computer Clubhouse.
“Learning about other clubhouses around the world will give me an insight on how they operate and this will help us to bring these global practices back to SA and improve our own local clubhouse.”
He adds that the Intel Computer Clubhouseoffers a creative, safe and mentally stimulating after-school environment for the local youth. “The clubhouse provides youth in our community with technology skills, which not only equip them with computer skills, but further equips them with the type of deployable skills they can use in their future careers.”
According to Paballo Diboke, coordinator at a Soweto Intel Computer Clubhouse, regular networking and new software applications are necessary to keep the local clubhouses up to date and on par with the rest of the world.
Intel says the Computer Clubhouses provide an out-of-school learning environment where young people work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, build confidence, develop 21st century skills, and find pathways to successthrough the use of technology.
