London Underground gets free WiFi

at six of London's underground tube stations, PC reports.

The service has been put in place ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and is now live at King's Cross, Warren Street, Oxford Circus, Green Park, Victoria and Euston. A total of 80 stations will be connected by the end of July.

The rollout programme, initiated by the cable TV provider and telecommunications company, will allow users of smartphones, tablet computers and laptops to browse the Internet while they are waiting for their trains, World TV PC writes.

NZ Herald writes that access to the wider Internet will be made available as part of Virgin Media's broadband and mobile subscriptions - or on a pay-as-you-go basis.

London's WiFi network can be clunky at times above ground, but organisers are confident the system will be able to handle the challenge of providing service kilometres underground.

The WiFi addition is part of a multibillion-pound effort to upgrade the capital's ageing subway network.

There are plans to connect 120 stations by the end of the year.
