Lotto call centre stands firm

Two weeks into business, new Lotto operator Gidani says its contact centre has received thousands of queries, but is managing to handle the volume.

According to Thembi Tulwana, Lotto spokesman for Gidani, the Lotto call centre received more than 55 000 queries between 1 and 14 October.

"Regarding our central systems, we have not experienced any problems," says Tulwana. "Our centres (both primary and ) are designed with a high-availability and redundant configuration."

She says the company has, however, become aware "that certain thermal rolls have produced some faulty lotto tickets. The areas where this has happened have been identified and Gidani field marketing teams have been deployed to assist our retailers. This is a minor start-up glitch and has largely been contained, and is being addressed with the requisite urgency and seriousness."

With regards to the MTN network, which is providing the GPRS technology for the Lotto to operate, Tulwana says it has "responded extremely well during the first days of operations, and could easily handle the high traffic" on the day of the first Lotto draw.

"There were minor glitches with a few base stations in Cape Town on Friday, 12 October. However, those were attended to immediately."

Gidani processed about eight million tickets for its first Lotto draw last weekend.
