Computer Associates International, Inc (CA) today announced that Loyola University New Orleans has successfully increased the effectiveness and efficiency of its data protection operations by implementing CA`s BrightStor Enterprise Backup (BrightStor EB).
According to Loyola`s IT management, BrightStor EB performs full backups and restores twice as quickly as the IBM ADSM system it displaced. It also reduces the time and effort required to execute both routine and emergency data protection operations - resulting in substantial cost savings for the university.
"CA`s BrightStor Enterprise Backup has dramatically simplified management tasks that were extremely time-consuming and complex with ADSM," said Joe Locascio, Director of Computer Services at Loyola. "Just as importantly, the superior speed of BrightStor EB gives us new flexibility in executing our daily storage management routines."
The university data protection requirements had grown over time as utilisation of its critical AIX-based messaging, Web and data warehousing systems increased. As a result, administration of its storage environment became increasingly time-consuming and labour-intensive.
Because Loyola had been using IBM ADSM for its backup operations, it first considered upgrading to IBM`s Tivoli Storage Manager. But, after evaluating several alternatives, Locascio and his team selected CA`s BrightStor EB based on its exceptional performance, unmatched ease of installation and use, and centralised monitoring and administration capabilities.
Since its deployment of BrightStor EB, Loyola has slashed its backup window from six hours per day to just three. This has reduced the impact of backup on critical network services. BrightStor EB also provides "hot backup" capabilities which allow the university to backup critical systems while they`re actively running. This has further enhanced the university`s total backup strategy.
"Loyola University provides a textbook example of how, by upgrading its backup solution, an organisation can better protect its data, reduce its cost of operations, and improve service levels on the network," said Gary McGuire, CA senior vice president, BrightStor solutions. "We look forward to continuing to work with the university`s stellar IT staff to further refine its backup and disaster recovery strategies."
