LTE market to reach $11bn
The worldwide spread of Long Term Evolution (LTE) network technology is accelerating, and will top $11 billion by 2014, reports Information Week.
Infonetics Research underestimated the impact of LTE in its report last year, predicting the LTE market would reach $5 billion in 2013; however its latest report claims the figure will more than double that in four years' time.
"There will be a dozen live LTE networks by the end of 2010," says Stephane Teral, Infonetics' principal analyst for mobile and fixed mobile convergence infrastructure. "The total number of committed LTE launches has grown to 64 so far with more commitments expected."
Consumers cut the cord
A new report from Toronto-based Convergence Consulting Group reveals more and more viewers are severing ties with the cord, literally, to watch their favourite shows on Netflix, or the Web, states TMCnet.
According to the report, nearly 800 000 households in the US have dropped their cable, satellite, or alternative TV providers (such as Verizon) in favour of Web-based videos (like Hulu), shows that can be downloaded through iTunes, Netflix and other methods.
TechCrunch reports the estimated 800 000 cord cutters represent less than 1% of the 100 million US households currently subscribing to a cable/satellite/telco TV carrier. But by the end of 2011, the report suggests the number of cord-cutting households in the US will double to about 1.6 million.
Smart homes get 3D devices
ISee3D is integrating single camera 3D capture technology into smart home devices, says Market Watch.
ISee3D CEO Dwight Romanica said: "The opportunities in smart communications devices are moving extremely rapidly. This is why we have chosen to work with one of the most innovative and nimblest convergence solutions providers (Insprit) in Korea."
Insprit MD, Bobby Cha, points out that the 3D technology addresses rising consumer demand for 3D movies across multiple devices as well as converged IP media solutions.
