Lucent Technologies` Cajun p550 switch powers Quake Convention network

Johannesburg, 13 Aug 1999

Lucent Technologies has announced that its award-winning Cajun P550 Gigabit Switch powered the local area network (LAN) that was at the heart of the annual Quake Convention (QUAKECON), held at the Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibition Hall, August 6-8. Lucent was also one of show`s official sponsors.

More than 1,000 people from around the world attended QUAKECON `99, the industry`s leading online computer gaming event, where fans of id Software`s popular QUAKE game and other titles gather to participate in tournaments and attend a variety of gaming workshops.

At QUAKECON `99, two of Lucent`s fault-tolerant Cajun P550 Switches served as the foundation of the event`s critical core network infrastructure. The P550 Switch - with its back plane switching capacity of 45.76 gigabits per second - provides the high throughput necessary to handle and propel enormous traffic loads across a network of computers quickly and simply.

With its ability to combine 10 megabits per second (Mbps) Ethernet, 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet and 1,000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet modules in the same chassis, the 7-slot Cajun P550 is designed for campus-wide backbone networks and easily scales as network requirements grow.

Lucent`s P550 is a member of the company`s Cajun Campus portfolio of enterprise Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and multifunction LAN switches.
