The pan-African telecoms services provider has connected a fibre-optic terrestrial network in Malawi that aims to provide Internet capacity via Seacom and Eassy sub-sea cables.
Mike van den Bergh, CEO of Gateway Communications, says the company aims, in the long-term, to provide affordable and accessible high-quality connectivity for every African country.
“This will be achieved through the ongoing investment we are making in infrastructure, the roll-out of terrestrial networks, our fibre capacity on all sub-sea cables, and our on the ground local expertise throughout Africa.”
He says it is hoped the country will now have direct access to fibre capacity from Africa, instead of re-routing all connectivity needs through Europe.
All of the available capacity has already been sold, according to the company, adding that it is looking to develop the project later this year to boost further utilisation.
Malawi currently has an Internet penetration of around 4.6% and a mobile penetration of approximately 16%. Gateway says there is a huge potential for Internet growth and an opportunity for more citizens to get connected.
This year Gateway Communications will implement similar initiatives in Botswana and Namibia as well as other African countries.
