Malaysia ushers in New Millennium without incidence

Johannesburg, 31 Dec 1999

Kuala Lumpur, 1 January 2000 - Malaysia greeted the Year 2000 without any hitches thanks to the many hours of preparation to ensure that all systems in the nine critical sectors and government are Y2K compliant and contingency plans in place to ensure a smooth transition into the New Year.

"As at 12.45am this morning, the National Operations Centre has no reports of any Y2K related disruptions in the country. The situation at present is normal," said Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia.

The Minister, who also has overview of Malaysia`s Y2K programme, said "Nevertheless, the National Operation Centre and those at state and district levels will continue to monitor the situation. We remain confident that there will be no major glitches."

The Government of Malaysia, with the assistance and cooperation of the private sector, has been preparing for Y2K for about two years. RM850 million (US$224 million) was allocated for detection and remediation for Government systems and an estimated RM1.1 billion was spent by the private sector.

As a result, Malaysia has achieved a high level of Y2K in all key sectors of the economy and, no major Y2K events have occurred.

A National Y2K Contingency Plan covering the period September 1999 to March 2000 is in place and a Y2K Operations Centre established in December to monitor and coordinate any response related to Y2K events.
