Manage billions with mobile intelligence

Technology can monitor anyone 'anywhere on earth'.
Johannesburg, 14 Jan 2008

Hundreds and thousands of people are involved in projects and industries in remote parts of the world where there is no standard infrastructure or communication available.

This shouldn't pose a problem any longer. DexSecurity Solutions utilises three-dimensional technology to solve the problem.

Firstly, a two-finger geometrical scan can be used in industries where normal fingerprint scanners are inefficient. Tough manual labour and working in extremely dirty conditions (eg, oil, mud, etc) can result in standard scanners not being able to read the fingerprints of workers.

This is where two-finger geometric scanners are a much better option, because they register a three-dimensional image of the two fingers as reference. In effect it means that a 'photo' is taken of the two fingers from above and from the sides.

The location or area could be problematic too, eg, at remote sites where mines are developed or dams built. Because there are no Ethernet communication cables in such areas, it is impossible to effect sensible verification of workers and their true working hours with standard technology.

Dex has come up with a portable, mobile unit that connects to a management system anywhere in the world by means of cellphone networks. The project manager literally sits in his vehicle onsite and connects to the main system.

It enables management onsite to verify each worker, eliminate 'buddy clocking', keep track of check-in and check-out times and process all the information without infrastructure onsite.

The Director of Operational Services at DexSecurity Solutions, Marius van Niekerk, says it is incredible that some short-sighted companies still don't utilise existing technology that could identify and monitor anyone, anywhere on earth.

He says existing biometric systems can monitor check-in and check-out times, tea breaks, overtime and even toilet breaks to ensure that workers on duty work maximally and are treated fairly.

By faultlessly monitoring and managing working hours and overtime, wage disputes could also be reduced dramatically. Real-time updates are available at the press of a button. It saves time and fosters good relationships.

The same technology is ideal for all work to be carried out in remote areas, eg, the mining, construction, security and even the film industries.
