Manage your HSDPA Internet bundles

Johannesburg, 01 Jun 2007

LayerOne, an Internet Solutions subsidiary and HSDPA provider, has launched another new HSDPA service, The HSDPA Mobility Manager, aimed at helping organisations manage the growing number of HSDPA users connecting to the Internet and their company network.

Currently, companies that purchase HSDPA data bundles have no access to information pertaining to total use of data by each user and the company, but instead have to manage each account separately.

The main reason these tools have not been made available is due to the networks not allowing companies to aggregate their Internet data bundles or carry over spare bandwidth to the following month if unused.

LayerOne introduced the management system, to give its corporate clients and partners a look into what each user is doing on a daily basis, as well as measure the total usage against the aggregated pool of bandwidth that the bundles make up.

Companies using this system can now see, on any day in a month, how far they are to breaking their data bundle, and who the responsible party is. The system is currently free to LayerOne or Internet Solutions customers, but will most likely become a charged service for clients joining their network after 1 September 2007.

"Management of HSDPA is the key to reducing the high cost of 'out of bundle' data charges, and ensuring that users abusing the system or service can be identified quickly with little or no cost to the company. To date we have not billed a corporate client for out of bundle data on their aggregated pool, and we have several thousand corporate users. The mobility management system makes HSDPA the most attractive and manageable mobile solution available in South Africa," says Stuart Hardy, MD of LayerOne

LayerOne recommends that companies reduce the size of their bundles, as 90% of users don't need more than 250MB of bandwidth. But most companies have opted for the higher bandwidth bundles, due to fear of over usage, as well as a lack of smaller bundle options and management being available.

The average data bundle size provided by LayerOne is in the 250MB range and because of the management system, no one is at risk of paying out of bundle fees.

"With our management system, companies can really take advantage of our unique HSDPA offerings, which include aggregation, a one month spare bandwidth carry-over and several other services. The system also allows companies to pull reports on users and the company in the current or previous months, as well as set notifications on usage levels via e-mail, to ensure users are aware of their usage against their allocation of data. Our aim is to make sure we select the right bundles for our clients so we never have to charge them for out of bundle data," ends Hardy.
