Low-cost airline Mango is embarking on a "mammoth" recruitment and IT skills development drive in a bid to develop internal ability and encourage a reliance on domestic talent.
The airline says it has spent the past few years developing its own internal IT resources, which has allowed self-sufficiency and development capability. "It is this ability that has seen Mango develop MARS (Mango Airline Reservation System) as well as Africa's first mobile booking and consumer flight management applications for all major platforms, among others."
Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser says IT in-sourcing has allowed the business to pursue and implement solutions and innovations quicker than would otherwise have been the case.
"Programming talent in SA rivals that of some of the best knowledge-based economies in the world. There is no reason to outsource beyond our borders when highly qualified talent is available locally."
The airline has plans to recruit several more IT professionals with Windows, .Net, C++ and Linux experience.
Mango also has an internal mentorship programme aimed at developing programming ability across the team and is in the process of designing an internship programme within its IT department, in order to develop a new talent pool.
"The airline already has a strong internship programme in some areas of the business with IT a priority on our radar," says Kaiser. More information in the internship programme for IT graduates will be available over the next few months.
