Maps assist war against Malaria

Scientists have created the most detailed global online maps of malaria prevalence ever compiled in order to track the progress in malaria intervention efforts, says The Technology Review.

Amazon will work with the group and has opened a free credit line of $12 000 dollars of computing time on their systems.

The maps are based on over 13 000 surveys taking two years to compile and model across the entire globe down to a 5-by-5 kilometre resolution, which required about a month of computing time.

Wireless tech monitors hygiene

Physicians and computer scientists at the University of Iowa have collaborated on a pilot study to create a low-cost green technology that automatically tracks the use of hand hygiene dispensers when healthcare workers enter and exit patient rooms, says Emax Health.

The failure of healthcare workers to perform appropriate hand hygiene is one of the leading preventable causes of infections associated with healthcare. The new technology represents a major shift from the current method of monitoring hand hygiene compliance.

The pilot study used ZigBee technology, which is part of a new generation of wireless devices that require less power. Workers wear small, pager-sized badges to monitor their use of hand hygiene dispenser stations prior to entering patient rooms.

AuthenTec upgrades J3400 tablet PC

AuthenTec, a provider of fingerprint sensors and solutions, announced that its fingerprint sensor has been integrated into the new Motion Computing J3400 rugged tablet PC, reports FOXBusiness.

The J3400 is suited for highly mobile tablet PC users across a variety of markets including healthcare, construction, field sales, service and government.

The J3400 tablet, which offers all-day battery life and a bright outdoor display, integrates AuthenTec's AES2550 fingerprint sensor to protect the tablet PC, its stored data, and the networks to which it connects.
