Olympic Games IT partner Atos Origin says it has already achieved key milestones for IT support for the Torino 2006 Winter Games to be held in Italy in February 2006.
The company says preparations have been under way for three years. The integration test lab used by Atos Origin and other IT partners to test and integrate the Olympic Games` IT infrastructure, including the information security systems and software applications, is fully operational, it adds.
Johannesburg-based Atos Origin business development manager Johann Hershensohn says the integration test lab, as well as the first round of testing, have met the required milestones.
Hershensohn notes that skills and support play a major role in the IT infrastructure of an event of this magnitude, and says a global business unit, known as Major Events, will draw 250 skilled employees from Atos Origin offices around the world to form the core team. Staff from Atos Origin SA will be among those sent to the Torino games in support of the organising committee.
In addition, 2 000 IT staff, partners, service providers and volunteers will be trained to assist in running the IT systems at the 28 competition and non-competition venues.
Hershensohn says exhaustive testing will continue in the run-up to the games. "Testing is key to the success of the event since the deadlines do not move. To ensure we are ready, 24-hour live monitoring of all information security devices from our operations centre, as well as having incident response teams readily available, will ensure any unforeseen incident is detected and managed properly."
