Marconi launches new ServiceOn management portfolio

Johannesburg, 30 Jun 2000

Marconi, a global supplier of advanced communications solutions, has launched ServiceOn Management, a comprehensive, integrated suite of multi-vendor and management solutions that enable service providers to more effectively deliver, and bill for a broad range of value-added services.

Designed to support all types of broadband transport and access networks -- including Internet protocol (IP), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), SONET (synchronous optical networking), DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) -- this scalable suite of products and solutions enables service providers to simply and cost-effectively manage their entire network, end-to-end. Marconi demonstrated the high performance capabilities of ServiceOn Foundation and ServiceOn Accountant the first of several products in the company`s ServiceOn Management suite to be introduced at SUPERCOMM2000, in Atlanta, Georgia, early in June.

"For service providers operating in today`s dynamic, highly competitive marketplace, the key to sustaining success lies in their ability to be first-to-market with a rich selection of next-generation products and services, as well as efficiently manage and control their entire multi-vendor networks from a single interface," said Koos Vorster, Chief Executive of Marconi Communictions South Africa. "The direction of Marconi`s ServiceOn Management suite addresses this requirement."

"With ServiceOn Management, Marconi is taking network and service management one step further, offering service providers simple, efficient control over their entire networks. This single multi-vendor management platform, with pay-as-you-grow pricing, will allow service providers to realize significant cost savings, improve time to market, and generate new revenues in the world of the new public network," added Vorster.

ServiceOn Management complements Marconi`s entire existing range of network and service management products and solutions. Marconi will assist and offer ongoing support to its new and existing customers migrating to the new platform. ServiceOn Management solutions support standard computing technologies including Java, CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) and XML (Extensible Mark-Up Language). It enables service providers to manage their networks end-to-end more easily than in the past via the Web, using an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI).

Introducing ServiceOn Foundation and ServiceOn Accountant

ServiceOn Foundation is a built-for-the future, carrier class management solution for broadband networks that offers the most streamlined connection management tool in the industry. It provides complete, end-to-end network and service management via a Web-enabled GUI. It also offers integrated discovery, topology and fault, configuration and performance management; context-sensitive drill-down for a wide range of network devices and links; a "drag and drop" device topology display; and real-time performance statistics for nodes, ports, paths or circuits, supporting multiple, concurrent users. Its standards-based TMN (Telecommunications Management Networks)-based architecture provides the foundation for next-generation networking technologies such as Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), Multi Protocal Lambda Switching (MPS) and Policy-Based Network Management (PBNM).

ServiceOn Accountant is a software solution created by Marconi in conjunction with Portal Software, Inc. and ACE*COMM, designed to meet the complex and evolving billing requirements of service providers operating in the Internet world. It enables operators to bill usage by time, traffic volume, application, Quality of Service, source and destination. It provides the flexibility to use multiple invoicing formats, including HTML, web pages or email. ServiceOn Accountant also enables a service provider to differentiate its service offering by providing its customers with real-time access to the current account balance and available credits.

According to Vorster, ServiceOn Foundation and ServiceOn Accountant are available immediately in South Africa.
