Telkom aims to trim its staff by a third, said CEO Sipho Maseko.

Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko aims to cut the company's around 21 000 staff by a third and "fire" some 1 000 managers, reports the Business Report.

According to the paper, Maseko aims to trim the workforce within the next five years.

Telkom last year went through a voluntary retrenchment and early retirement process that saw it part ways with about 1 500 staff.

However, Maseko has said more costs need to come out of the company. He said if Telkom does not cut more out of its cost base, it is in "deep trouble" as its revenue growth is flat.

Business Report, via a Bloomberg article, notes the latest job-cutting suggestions follow a Bain report into the company.

The article did not specify the contents of the Bain report, but noted Telkom and Bain would be working together.

Telkom has been under pressure in recent years as its core land-line business continues to be eroded and Telkom Mobile continues to bleed.

Maseko has hinted at a new strategic direction for Telkom, including undisclosed discussions around its mobile arm in a bid to stem the bleeding and trim capital expenditure, quad-play services and content distribution on its and pushing revenue growth.
