MasterCard pilots NFC in Oz cinemas

NFC News reports.

The app (pronounced quicker) is being piloted at Australian cinema chain, Hoyts, at multiple La Premiere theatres around Sydney.

Using the QkR app, available on both iPhone and Android, movie-goers can scan the QR code, manually enter in the code, or tap their near field communications (NFC)-enabled phone on the NFC tag, which pulls up a menu of food items, GigaOM says.

Users can then pay with a preloaded credit or debit card and their food will be delivered right to their seats.

Mobile Commerce Press says that, unlike other mobile wallets, the QkR platform will not focus solely on NFC technology; it will also use QR codes as a form of mobile payment.

Mobile commerce is gaining momentum, and consumers are beginning to demand more advanced mobile wallet applications as the number of NFC-enabled smartphones grows.
