The Department of Basic 's (DBE's) Web site crashed as users flocked to search for 2013 matric results.

Access was intermittent on Tuesday morning, following basic education minister Angie Motshekga's announcement of a record 78.2% pass rate for last year's students.

A site feature allows candidates to check individual results by entering their exam numbers into a search field.

The Web site stopped responding early in the morning when users flocked in their thousands to check their results.

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the incident is being handled with urgency. "Just after 6am, we had 11 000 people visiting the Web site," he says.

Meanwhile, students and parents continue to seek information on subject marks. "We've received requests for the past 10 days about how to access results," says Mhlanga.

He encouraged pupils to make use of SMS services if they encounter problems online. Students can send their ID and exam numbers to 35658 to receive their results from the SABC.
