Former home affairs director-general (DG) Mavuso Msimang is now making the “transition from the department to retirement”.

Msimang's tenure at the department came to an end last month, when he decided not to renew his contract with government. He assumed the role of DG in May 2007, after leaving the troubled State IT Agency (SITA).

According to the department's minister at the time, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Msimang was a sign of progress for home affairs, and he was expected to turnaround the troubled department.

However, Msimang's tenure was marked by the controversial multibillion-rand “Who Am I online” project, which was delayed several times and subjected to a forensic audit. Msimang has declined to comment on the situation with the project, saying he would rather not jeopardise the parties involved.

At the end of last month, the department invalidated the contract, which was awarded to local empowered business, GijimaAst. The matter has not yet been resolved.

When Msimang left SITA for home affairs, he was the state ICT services provider's only CEO to complete his contract.

Msimang says his plans are about to take a family focus. He says he will join his siblings to form a trust, which will the of farmlands they have inherited from his parents. “It's no big income, but it is something we need to do.”

Msimang says his focus will be on e-, targeting companies which have no understanding of the new governance rules. “With all the experience I have gained over the years, I am looking forward to sharing it with companies.”

He says his focus will be on King 3. “Many companies don't understand the concept of governance and, with King 3, the penalties for bad governance will be severe, both on the company and the individual.”

Msimang says he is looking forward to his new life, but will stay active both in “body and in mind”.

Mkhuseli Apleni, previously the department's CFO, will take over from Msimang as DG.
