META Group tags EMC as leader

EMC has announced that it was named the market leader in META Group`s recently released METAspectrum for the storage area (SAN) market. META Group is a research and consulting firm that focuses on information technology and business transformation strategies.

"EMC was also one of two companies named as a market leader in the networked attached storage (NAS) market, making EMC the only company to achieve `leader` status in both the SAN and NAS markets, according to META Group," says Alex Robertson, country systems engineering and professional services manager, EMC SA.

"EMC customers have the distinctive advantage of being able to leverage any combination of SAN, NAS and content addressed storage (CAS) to support their business requirements," he states.

The METAspectrum analysis results are based on a series of criteria designed to help IT professionals gauge the importance of key market performance characteristics (technology, services and execution) and market presence characteristics (vision/, investments and industry focus) to make informed decisions about which vendors are capable of meeting their business requirements.

Phil Goodwin, program director for META Group`s Server Infrastructure Strategies , says: "More and more, end-users are opting for shared storage infrastructures that can leverage both SAN and NAS to support their integrated application environments. IT administrators must decide what business problems they are trying to solve and select a vendor based on a holistic evaluation, particularly for strategic acquisitions."

EMC`s Symmetrix 8000 was the product identified as most suited to the SAN market, and, of the six storage companies analysed in NAS, EMC was one of two clear leaders, while all other competitors were categorised as "challengers" or "distant followers".

"As the `NAS versus SAN` debate raged over the last few years, EMC operated under the strategy that both technologies had their place in the storage infrastructure," Robertson says. "Our ability to help customers realise the advantages of both SAN and NAS through unified management has elevated EMC to its awarded position in both categories."
