Sun Microsystems SA has announced the appointment of MGX as its first Storage Market Development Partner (SMDP), bringing to market a new Sun initiative focusing on storage - currently the IT industry's highest growth area in IT spend.
MGX is Sun's first SMDP appointment in Africa, and the third for the Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) region.
Stefano Mattiello, managing director at Sun Microsystems SA, says MGX's track record in the storage environment was the key criterion in its selection. "We require a partner that has a comprehensive understanding of the storage market as well as related expertise," says Mattiello.
He adds that the appointment of SMDPs is a strategy Sun Microsystems is deploying globally as a result of the enormous growth in this IT sector. He stresses however, that existing Sun Systems business partners will not be excluded from continuing to market Sun Storage solutions.
Welcoming the appointment, Ed Gassner, MD of Enterprise Solutions at MGX, says the addition of Sun Disk storage systems complements the company's existing range of storage solutions. As a digital storage solutions provider we only partner with manufacturers of world class technology and our policy is to actively invest in skills and resources to support these technologies.
"In doing so we have established ourselves as the leading SAN solution provider. We currently represent StorageTek, Veritas and Brocade and the addition of Sun Disk significantly enhances our offerings in the storage environment. With the inclusion of the Sun Disk our competency centre will be extended to include a Sun SAN environment," says Gassner.
Gassner believes the storage market in SA is valued at approximately R1.5 billion annually and is the highest growth area in IT spend. "MGX's commitment to Sun architecture is further strengthened by our participation as the Sun storage development partner. This is an exciting prospect," says Gassner.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision -- The Network Is The ComputerTM -- has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that power the 'net and allow companies worldwide to take their businesses to the nth. With $19.2 billion in annual revenues, Sun can be found in more than 170 countries and on the World Wide Web at http://sun.com.
