JSE Securities Exchange-listed MGX has been voted the world`s top distributor for the year 2000 of the storage range of products from Nasdaq-listed StorageTek, the world leader in its space.
MGX, through its Storage Solutions business unit, beat competition from 28 other countries to secure the award, presented recently in Denver, Colorado. This is the first time MGX has won the global award.
Pieter Engelbrecht, product marketing manager of MGX Storage Solutions, says the comprehensive product range from StorageTek allowed the division to fulfil entire data storage requirements for organisations.
MGX has more than 70% of the enterprise storage backup market in South Africa, with StorageTek products sold into most of the Financial Mail Top 100 companies.
Engelbrecht is upbeat about the future of tape storage. "90% of data is not stored on disk, but on tape. It`s a more cost-effective medium, costing cents per Megabyte, as opposed up to rands per Megabyte on disk. "Scalability is easier than with disk. Some of our clients bought their first libraries 10 years ago, with storage capacities of 1.2 Terabytes. Today, on the same footprint, they are able to store more than a Petabyte."
Engelbrecht says MGX`s Storage Solutions will concentrate its energies on developing a virtual storage model based on StorageTek`s virtual storage initiative.
"Storage media costs may be coming down, but data management continues to consume manpower. We will concentrate our energies on deploying the latest technology to provide clients with virtual storage solutions which eliminate the current data management complexities. The aim is to allow clients to run their business applications where they wish, and hook seamlessly into data storage.
MGX Storage Solutions has represented StorageTek since 1982, and is the sole distributor of StorageTek products in South Africa.
