MIA Telecommunications releases Digi-cell

By IT Public Relations
Johannesburg, 12 Jun 2003

MIA Telecommunications has announced the release of its Digi-Cell GSM least-cost router, a high-quality, locally manufactured unit that provides a cost-effective means of achieving fixed cellular connectivity to the GSM network via a PABX, PC or LAN environment. The Digi-Cell provides simultaneous voice and SMS functionality as well as PC-FAX and data capability.

"The Digi-Cell router is also capable of utilising some of the latest network technologies available, such as GPRS," says MIA Telecommunications CEO Malcolm Driessel.

"SMSs can be sent via GPRS at far greater speeds. An SMS usually takes about six seconds to reach its destination, while with GPRS it takes less than one second. This is especially useful with bulk messaging, as many more messages can be sent in the same period of time, making for substantial cost savings in the long-term."

Other SMS features include:

* A user-friendly Windows platform with GUI interface.

* SMSs can be sent to cellphones or e-mail addresses.

* Re-occurring pre-dated message facility, which allows users to pre-date messages for any time in the future. This is ideal for company birthdays or reminders and is more cost-effective than making a phone call.

* LAN connectivity for multiple users.

Faxes are sent and received via a PC using programmes such as WINFAX. Data transfer can be handled using standard GSM bandwidth or GPRS (for example, an Internet call). The router can switch between voice, fax and data modes automatically with no need to reset the system after a fax or data call.

"The configuration of the router is extremely flexible and can be adapted to any PABX environment on the market, owing to its unique programmable SLIC interface," Driessel continues. "The system is programmable for controlled call-back using up to 128 pre-stored cellphone numbers, or it can be set up for unrestricted access for all callers, depending on clients` needs."

The Digi-Cell router can also be programmed to monitor network signal loss and excessive polling between network cells. Reporting on these problems can be done via SMS. Additionally, the router also uses SMS to monitor and report on clients` actual billing time. This is particularly helpful in assisting with early fault detection, although the Digi-Cell router can continue to maintain all outgoing and incoming calls through the PABX even if the Telkom service is down.

All programming and diagnostics as well as any software upgrades can be done on site, or remotely via PC or laptop and modem. "The Digi-Cell uses a state-of-the-art Wavecom Integrated (Dual Band) modem which ensures extremely good speech quality," Driessel adds.

Small (200g), compact (130mm x 85mm x 30mm) and easy to install, the Digi-Cell is distributed and fully supported by MIA Telecom and carries a comprehensive one-year guarantee, which includes automatic swap out. On site and telephonic support is also provided.
