Micron unveils SSD offerings
Micron Technology unveils its RealSSD family of solid state drive storage devices, says PCWorld.
The new RealSSD line also includes the embedded USB and module products. The RealSSD Embedded USB can be plugged into a PC or blade server system to provide operating system storage and boot capabilities via an USB 2.0 interface.
The RealSSD Module is a SATA-enabled solid state drive for server-based applications that measures 25mm high by 133.5mm long and less than 4mm thick.
Unix server shipments fall
According to a Gartner survey released on Monday, Unix-based server shipments witnessed a slowdown during the third quarter as adoption of x86 servers increased globally, says PCWorld.
Unit shipments of Unix servers dropped for the top Unix vendors, Sun Microsystems and IBM, though revenue increased, Gartner said in the survey. Hewlett-Packard saw both its unit shipments and its revenue for Unix servers rise, the survey said.
Overall Unix server shipments fell 6.4% to 103 267 units. Sun led the pack, shipping 52 038 units, but that was 12% fewer than a year earlier.
Social networking sells servers
Sun Microsystems is seeing a surge in server sales as social networking sites increase, says SDA-India.
Take the example of MySpace: The American website is the world’s sixth most visited portal and has over 200 million accounts. And it is adding 270 000 users every day. Sun Microsystems is happy to see this kind of growth in data.
Sun`s executive VP of software, Richard Green, says the company has been lucky to see this kind of growth because complex applications like social networking sites demand more storage space, resulting in server sales "going through the roof."
