Microsoft approves EMC storage for clustering and BackOffice

Johannesburg, 21 Sep 1998

Having completed Microsoft`s hardware compatibility testing, including clustered Windows NT environments using Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS), enterprise storage vendor, EMC Computer Systems` Symmetrix subsystems have been certified for use with the operating system and received approval for the `Designed for Microsoft BackOffice` logo programme.

Hugh Wason, country manager at EMC`s local subsidiary, says this provides prospective customers with Microsoft`s assurance of compatibility and integration when deploying Windows NT and/or the BackOffice suite of products. "Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems had previously completed the hardware compatibility testing for storageRAID requirements and this approval underpins the platform`s suitability for providing scalable, high performance, high availability storage for Microsoft BackOffice and Microsoft Windows NT environments.

"EMC Storage has been used successfully in these and other open systems environments for more than two years."

The stamp of approval supports the growing incidence of Microsoft BackOffice - which includes Windows NT Server, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange - in very large installations, according to Craig Fiebig, Microsoft`s director of BackOffice marketing. "EMC`s Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems deliver the high availability and scalability enterprise customers seek when deploying line-of-business solutions."

Wason says Fibre Channel-attached EMC enterprise storage and software are playing an increasingly key role in ensuring information is properly managed and protected as more large-scale NT-based applications are deployed. "By centralising the growing amounts of data generated by Microsoft`s popular BackOffice offerings, customers are able to maximise the investment in NT."
