Microsoft delays patch

Quality problems have forced Microsoft to can the planned September release of its monthly software patch, reports Australian IT.

The company has given no indication of when the security update will be ready, but has confirmed it will not release the 13 September update as scheduled.

Microsoft Australia-New Zealand chief security Peter Watson said the company had last week provided its normal advance notice to customers that it intended to release a security patch this week.

However, quality testing indicated the patch should be delayed, he said.

IBM expands server software line

IBM is expected to expand its server software line with a handful of integration and workflow-related products, reports CNET.

The company plans to introduce two integration servers, called WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus and WebSphere Process Server.

The software pulls from various sources and tracks different steps in a business process, according to a company representative.

In addition, IBM plans to introduce a development tool geared specifically for writing programs that move data between systems.

IBM has also developed professional services for building software that conforms to a service-oriented architecture.

Alcatel beefs up Layer 2 support

In its quest to add features to its 7750 Service Router, Alcatel is releasing software that cranks up support for Layer 2 services, reports Light Reading.

The new features for the 7750 and the 5620 Services Availability Manager reflect the persistence of older services.

Carriers are keen on moving all customer traffic to a converged network based on IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching, but have always known the migration would be slow.

"Convergence is going to be a reality, but it`s going to be a long-term challenge," says Lindsay Newell, VP of marketing for Alcatel`s IP division.
