Microsoft South Africa announces immediate availability of Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

Updated Microsoft Windows 98 delivers enhanced online experience and home networking technologies

Microsoft South Africa today announced the immediate availability of Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, an update to the popular Microsoft Windows 98 operating system. The update offers consumers the latest Internet, home networking and hardware technologies within a fast and reliable environment. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition will be broadly available in local retail outlets. In addition, top PC manufacturers such as Compaq Computer Corporation, Dell Computer, Hewlett-Packard and IBM are now offering Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition loaded on their new PCs.

"Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition combines the leading functionality of Microsoft Windows 98 with the latest in Internet technology," said Tracy McKinon, consumer marketing manager at Microsoft South Africa. "Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Microsoft Windows 95 customers can now take full advantage of an Internet-enabled PC which is speedier, easier to use and more reliable. A Windows PC is a great investment for consumers today. Microsoft is making the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition update available to existing Microsoft Windows 98 customers interested in obtaining this new functionality. Microsoft Windows 98 customers can order the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Updates CD-ROM from the Microsoft Windows 98 Web site, www.microsoft.com/windows

Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition delivers enhanced consumer PC experience Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition builds on Microsoft Windows 98`s core technologies to enhance the online experience. Specifically, the update:

  • Enhances the online experience. With the addition of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, users can find information on the Web faster and easier than ever. Connecting with friends and family all over the world is also simpler with the addition of NetMeeting 3 for video conferencing, chatting and collaborating online. Additionally, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition includes Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.1 to provide playback of popular multimedia formats, including streaming audio and video such as Windows Media, MP3 and more.

  • Enables a connected home. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition offers a truly networked home with the introduction of a new technology called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

  • Operates within a fast and reliable environment. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition allows for speedier application loading and faster shut down. It offers faster rendering of HTML content such as Web-enabled folders and Microsoft Windows Help as a result of the integrated Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 technologies. Additionally, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition includes Microsoft Windows 98 Service Pack 1.
