Microsoft updates SQL Server 2008

Microsoft has released an update to SQL Server 2008 with improvements around reporting and management, eWeek reports.

SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes updates for Reporting Services integration with SharePoint products. SQL Server 2008 SP2 report servers can integrate with SharePoint 2010 products.

SP2 also now provides a new add-in to support the integration of SQL Server 2008 R2 report servers with SharePoint 2007 products.

McHenry Savings Bank's energy cut

McHenry Savings Bank's workstation energy diet has been cut about 97%, but it's still enough to feed a mouse, a keyboard and a monitor, according to Bank Technology News.

Faced with energy bloat and a lean IT staff, over the past year the $282 million-asset Chicago-area community bank has replaced almost all its PCs and laptops with virtualised workstations enabled by thin client devices from Pano Logic that are about 3.5 by 3.5 by two inches in size.

The move is expected to reduce energy costs by about $23 000 over the first three years of deployment, because the new workstations expend about 3% of the energy used by traditional PCs.

ACC goes for tech refresh

The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) has planned to upgrade its ageing communication tools, says Government News.

The statutory body operates a series of communication technologies - integrated over a number of years - including e-mail, instant messaging, presence, secure on-net voice telephony and secure room-based video conferencing.

Currently, the ACC server infrastructure is deployed predominantly into data centres in Canberra and Sydney.
