Middle East to get Google VOIP
Google says it will provide Middle East versions of its latest voice-over-Internet protocol (VOIP) service, reports Arabian Business.com.
However, the search engine giant has no set timeline for the roll-out of the service, which currently allows Gmail users based in the US to make low-cost VOIP calls to any part of the world.
US-based Gmail clients can make a phone call directly from their computer to a UAE landline for just 19c per minute.
Skype offers WiFi support for Android
Skype has updated its Android-based client to include support for WiFi connections, states Tom's Guide.
Previously, the service was available only for Verizon's 3G network, and would not load until the user shut off their WiFi connection.
However, Skype notes users will still need a 3G connection to make and receive VOIP calls.
VOIP cuts energy costs
A US firm claims its latest range of hardware can help firms reduce their energy consumption, says Telappliant.
Snom has developed a 3xx series of VOIP phones which use less power than rival models.
Snom also offers its customers a calculator tool which highlights the cost and energy savings a user can make in comparison to other VOIP phone models.
