Middleware, businessware vendors are plugging into the wireless market opportunity, says IDC

By IDC
Johannesburg, 11 Jan 2001

The market is creating substantial opportunities for middleware and businessware vendors. According to IDC, the need for a reliable, scalable, and manageable infrastructure to support burgeoning -related activities will cause wireless infrastructure software systems` (WISS) worldwide revenue to jump from $217 million in 1999 to $5 billion in 2004.

"Without a solid infrastructure underlying its e-business initiatives, an IT organization will eventually collapse under the pressures and unpredictability of the Web environment," said Sally Cusack, manager for IDC`s Middleware and Businessware program. "Middleware and businessware build the solid foundation by offering a reliable, scalable, available, and easy-to-integrate standards-based framework for various ebusiness software components and wireless devices connecting and disconnecting as business demands dictate."

According to IDC, seven functional markets lay the foundation for WISS: legacyware, data access middleware, remote procedure call middleware, message-oriented middleware, transaction server middleware, object middleware, and business management systems. Of these, businessware management systems will generate the most revenue.

IDC believes the market demand for WISS will first occur in Asia/Pacific. The European and U.S. markets will follow.
