Migrating legacy mainframe applications cost-effectively

Sun announces significant enhancements to rehosting software
Johannesburg, 06 Dec 2002

In an effort to provide companies with significant cost-savings - while enabling tighter security and greater functionality when migrating their mainframe legacy applications - Sun Microsystems has announced new upgrades to its mainframe rehosting software.

By using the latest Sun Mainframe Transaction Processing Software 8.0 (SunMTP 8.0) and Sun Mainframe Batch Manager Software 10.0 (SunMBM 10.0) enterprises can cost-effectively run existing mainframe CICS, COBOL and batch applications traditionally found in commercial banking, insurance and retail on the latest server technology, virtually unmodified.

"Sun's already robust mainframe rehosting solution has been helping enterprises keep pace in modern, network datacentre environments," says Vernon Turner, group vice-president, global enterprise server solutions at research authority, IDC.

"The improved security, availability and Java connectivity features give companies, currently locked into a mainframe, more reasons to consider Sun's safe and cost-effective alternative."

To date, Sun has migrated more than 500 million lines of COBOL code off mainframe environments to server platforms.

Comments Daryl Blundell, sales solutions manager at Sun Microsystems SA: "Our mainframe rehosting software has, for example, enabled leading Canadian company, Transamerica Life Canada, to save more than 50% per year on mainframe system expenses, while improving the performance of their applications by 25%."

The SunMTP 8.0 and SunMBM 10.0 solutions feature enhanced interoperability between business-critical Java-based applications and legacy programs. It also enables companies to administer the system from virtually anywhere on a network.

Concludes Blundell: "By utilising the SunMTP 8.0 and SunMBM 10.0 solutions, companies can benefit from mainframe-like security without costly mainframe expenditure."
