MigrationWare acquires Avellino Discovery distributorship for Africa

Johannesburg, 22 Oct 2003

MigrationWare, a company offering a variety of products and services in the migration arena, has acquired the sole distributorship for Avellino Discovery, Avellino`s automated data analysis tool.

Through a co-operative marketing agreement recently reached by the two companies, MigrationWare will sell Discovery regionally with special focus on SA.

Proactive approach to migrations, integrations is the key

Mark Cooper, Managing Director for MigrationWare, said: "Adding Avellino Discovery to our product set completes our data analysis, migration and integration offering. Utilising Discovery, MigrationWare`s customers will gain a complete and accurate view of all their data before undertaking complex data migration and integration projects.

Cooper added: "Data profiling is about understanding your data on the one hand and ensuring that it is fit for purpose on the other. Today the world is awash with projects that involve the integration of multiple sets of data, ranging from data warehousing through ERP migration projects to enterprise application integrations.

"However, there are three basic problems that commonly afflict these environments. The first is that a lot of data is stored away in legacy systems that are often poorly documented (if at all) and even less understood. The second is that the data does not match the metadata that describes it. And the third is that the data contains errors and is inconsistent. Adding to this, a recent report by the Standish Group informed us that 88% of major IT projects fail to deliver on time and within budget because of these problems."

25 years in data migration, integration management

"As data discovery analysis becomes increasingly important to customers in SA, collaborating with a company like MigrationWare provides us with a great opportunity to break into a key market," said Blair Kantolinna, EMEA Manager for Avellino. "MigrationWare offers more than 25 years` experience in data migration and integration management, a large customer base that includes blue-chip companies, and software complementary to our own products. We have evaluated a broad range of providers in this space and have determined that MigrationWare would be the best partners in this arena."

Old Mutual, which recently implemented a data quality initiative across the Old Mutual Group with the help of Avellino Discovery, has found it is more proactive in managing and maintaining data quality standards.

Jill Wagner, Solutions Coordinator for DISC at Old Mutual, added: "Prior to using Avellino Discovery, understanding the quality and integrity of data was a tedious and lengthy manual task. Our team has little knowledge of our legacy systems so we needed a product that could automate much of the process and take the pain away from manually having to search for data-related problems.

"After a thorough evaluation, we selected Avellino Discovery over seven other vendors. The deciding factors in our decision were its functionality, ease of use and the reliable support from Avellino. We were particularly impressed with Discovery`s ability to drill down into the actual data to view suspected data quality exceptions in context."

"By aligning ourselves with Avellino, we can provide our customers with an all-inclusive toolset that will help them proactively address all data quality issues and greatly improve their chances of successful implementations," Cooper concluded.

Avellino Discovery

Avellino Discovery is an automated data analysis and profiling software tool that automatically discovers data anomalies, inconsistencies and relationships in data - enabling organisations to accurately define business rules to integrate existing and legacy data to new environments. The product is unique as it stores source data, metadata, schemas and other documentation in a single repository so that the user can accurately analyse the data and drill down into individual values, irrespective of the volumes of data. It can combine data from multiple sources and platforms for ease of analysis and viewing and has powerful functions such as the capability to compare data and predict joins across files, databases and different data structures.
