Mimecast has been included in the list of "Cool Vendors" in the “Cool Vendors in Archiving, 2009, by Carolyn DiCenzo, Kenneth Chin, Adam W Couture, on March 3rd 2009” report by Gartner.
According to the Gartner report: “The archiving market continues to expand as cool vendors enter with new storage options and services that make archiving more cost-effective and ease the migration of older data. IT organisations should continue to evaluate new, cool vendors as part of ongoing efforts to continue to update and modernise their services.”
Gartner also mentions: “For an increasing number of companies, especially those with 10 000 or fewer users, contracting with a service provider to archive e-mail is being selected over in-house solutions.”

Mimecast CEO Peter Bauer comments: “Mimecast is pleased to be included in Gartner's 'Cool Vendor in Archiving' report. The unique way in which Mimecast delivers software as a service (SaaS) based archiving means that customers rapidly regain control of their valuable e-mail information and simplify their overall e-mail infrastructures. On-premise archiving solutions can be challenging and complex, with many hidden costs for customers as data volumes build. Our unified e-mail management platform brings a fresh set of options to these businesses.”
Mimecast's SaaS email solution connects with an organisation's existing Exchange system and eliminates the growing risks and complexities of e-mail management to support emerging regulatory, legal and eDiscovery requirements.
Mimecast's service stores email messages and data according to corporate defined retention and destruction policies; the robust grid-technology produces sub-second search times even as the e-mail archive grows in time, and is priced as a fixed cost per user. End-users are able to search their personal archives directly within Outlook, with full drag and drop functionality supported - effectively giving them a bottomless inbox. Furthermore, should a customer's Exchange Server fail, Mimecast temporarily emulates Exchange, enabling Outlook users to remain online seamlessly during the recovery process. This avoids the cost and complexity of fail-over and fail-back DR models.
Metadata archiving ensures eDiscovery searches produce comprehensive audit trails for compliance and litigation requirements. Organisations with legacy e-mail such as .PSTs can ingest data into their Mimecast archive.
Bauer continues: “We find that businesses are looking for assurance that in moving to SaaS archiving service levels are not compromised. Mimecast offers 99.999% availability - one of the highest in the industry. The advancements and design of our own multi-tenant grid-technology means we are not dependent on OEM technologies and can rapidly roll-out new functionality and benefits to our customers.”

Gartner's Cool Vendors Selection Process
Gartner's listing does not constitute an exhaustive list of vendors in any given technology area, but rather is designed to highlight interesting, new and innovative vendors, products and services. Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness of a particular purpose.
Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: innovative, enable users to do things they couldn't do before; impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); intriguing, have caught Gartner's interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.
