Minister Siyabonga Cwele to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on Sunday in Qunu, Eastern Cape

Johannesburg, 14 May 2015

The minister of telecommunications and postal services Dr Siyabonga Cwele will be celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on Sunday, 17 May 2015 in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape.

Each year, on the 17th of May the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of this organisation. This year, 2015, marks the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union.

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

The department's focus in terms of the 2015 celebration of WTISD is to focus sharply on the human capital development aspect. The inequality of access and use of ICTs and therefore the ability to deploy their full potential is rooted, inter alia, in the unequal capabilities of individuals and groups, such as the poor, those living in rural areas, persons with disabilities and the elderly.

The event will provide career guidance and inform learners of the types of careers they can follow in the ICT sector and it will link them with job opportunities in respect of manufacturers in the sector.

Details are as follows:

Date: 17 May 2015
Venue: Nelson Mandela Museum, Qunu
Time: 10:00
