Minolta SA has won a lucrative public sector contract to supply up to 12 000 multifunctional printer, copier, scanner and fax devices to 25 government departments.

Wholly-owned by the Bidvest Group, and the principal distributor of Konica Minolta products, Minolta SA was awarded the three-year contract by the National Treasury last week.

Monochrome divisional manager Paul Symonds describes it as "one of the company`s biggest ever government contracts".

Minolta SA was awarded about 80% of the total tender, with the remaining 20% going to rival Nashua.

"Government has always been a big but this is probably the largest portion of a government tender we have won," he says.

The contract involves Minolta SA supplying and maintaining between 3 500 and 4 000 all-in-one devices annually, over a three-year term. The products to be deployed are seven types of monochromatic machines (BizHub 250, 350, 500, 600, 750, Pro 920, and Pro 1050) and one type of colour machine (BizHub C250).

The tender was issued at the end of February, he says, and Minolta`s machines were evaluated in May. Symonds is unable to reveal who the other short-listed bidders were, saying Minolta was never told.

Some of the larger state departments earmarked for the hardware overhaul include the National Prosecuting Authority, the Department of Social Development, Stats SA, Government Printing Works and the Department of Affairs and Forestry.
