The issue occurred across the country, but only affected some subscribers, says Richard Boorman, executive head of media relations.
Boorman explains there were issues with the home look-up register, which identifies customers to allow them to connect to the network.
In a few instances, the system failed and subscribers were unable to make calls, says Boorman. In most of the cases, customers were left without service, because the network refused to connect SIM cards, he explains.
The register went down at 8am this morning, but services were mostly restored by 9am, says Boorman. Vodacom is investigating the root cause, which did not affect a large percentage of subscribers, he adds.
