Mitel to expand current focus on collaboration and user-centric convergence by incorporating Microsoft Office Live Communication Server and new communications client code-named "Istanbul".
Mitel, a leading provider of IP communications solutions, has announced an agreement with Microsoft to develop a signalling and media gateway to complement Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and the upcoming communication client code-named "Istanbul".
Mitel`s signalling and media gateway is based on the SIP, XML and CSTA standards and will allow Microsoft`s applications to access Mitel`s IP-based call control, devices and applications, empowering businesses to leverage their existing investment in both Microsoft and Mitel communications solutions.
"Customers are demanding innovative solutions that enhance information worker productivity and bring business process efficiencies by combining collaboration tools with telephony," said Gurdeep Singh Pall, general manager, Real-Time Collaboration business unit at Microsoft.
"We are delighted to work with an IP-based communications solutions leader and innovator like Mitel to develop and deliver these integrated communication solutions."
In parallel with this development, Mitel will continue to port its collaboration, presence, messaging and contact centre applications to the Live Communications Server environment and will also provide an enhanced, Standards-based, real-time applications development platform for independent software vendors.
"Convergence has become an overused word that typically refers to voice, video and data running on the same infrastructure," said Andy Bull, director for Mitel South Africa.
"Mitel believes the excitement, value and future of IP communications is centred on convergence for the user which brings multimedia applications seamlessly together as a single intuitive experience."
Both companies are continuing to further develop their go-to-market strategies to match the release date in the first half of 2005.
