Mitsubishi Chemical and Seagate Software partner to bring media-based backup to Japanese market

Agreement affordably combines best-of-breed backup tools with magneto optical discs

Johannesburg, 23 Oct 1998
Seagate Software, the pioneer in Enterprise Information Management (EIM) and a leading provider of network storage management solutions and Mitsubishi Chemical, a leading producer of magneto optical (MO) discs, today announced an agreement that results in an entirely new backup application delivery method.

Using new auto-run technology developed by Seagate Software Consumer Products Group (CPG) for MO, as well as other removable media devices, the new solution (offered by Mitsubishi Chemical), automatically launches a backup of the users` system when the MO disc (which contains a media-based backup application) is inserted into the MO drive.

"As a clear backup leader for Microsoft Windows 3.x, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 95 and now Windows 98 operating systems, Seagate Software is the ideal backup software vendor to deliver media-based backup to the Japanese market," said Kazuhiko Nishikawa , manager,Information Storage Products Department, Mitsubishi Chemical. "The Company`s new removable media auto-run technology makes backup activities fast, simple and affordable for customers using the Mitsubishi Chemical MO drive."

"Seagate Software is pleased to partner with Mitsubishi Chemical as the first OEM to deliver our media-based application with auto-run technology," said Marshall Barton, general manager, Seagate Software, CPG. "The `Autoprotect` product illustrates the market requirement for enhanced ease-of-use and hands-free operation."

Seagate Software Adds Complete Backup and Storage to MO

The recently-signed OEM agreement with Mitsubishi Chemical, also the owner of Verbatim (a world leader in data storage hardware, media and solutions) enables the Seagate Software backup application (based on the award-winning Seagate Backup Exec) to be distributed on Mitsubishi Chemical MO media. The solution allows users of Mitsubishi`s MO media to automatically back-up their data by simply inserting the backup-enabled MO disc into the drive. The backup software is resident on the magneto optical media and does not have to be previously installed on the user`s hard drive. Mitsubishi Chemical offers the Windows 98 and Windows 95 Autoprotect product initially to the Japanese market only.

The Autoprotect software compression feature can increase MO disc capacity so that up to an entire hard drive (1.3 GB) may be stored on a single disc. For larger hard drives, the disc-spanning feature allows controlled distribution over two or more pieces of media.
