Alcatel is the leading supplier of GSM mobile networks in Africa with one mobile call out of four going through an Alcatel infrastructure and more than two countries out of three having selected an Alcatel mobile solution.
The Alcatel group counts 36 references in Africa: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central Africa, Congo, Congo (Democratic Republic), Djibouti, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Libya, La R'eunion, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia and Uganda.
With 7 million mobile lines, Alcatel connects one out of four mobile communications in Africa. And Alcatel`s best-selling GSM handsets, notably members of the One Touch family, have won over consumers all over the continent.
Vodacom in SA has reached record levels of mobile subscriber traffic - some 7 million calls per day - thanks to Alcatel`s dense network technology known as Evolium micro base stations. For Vodacom, Alcatel is also installing Africa`s first GPRS network that will give mobile Internet access.
In Eastern, Western and Central Africa, operators have selected Alcatel`s mobile infrastructure solutions. Recently in Tanzania, the installation - already started in the greater Dar ES Salaam area - will connect about 120 000 subscribers mainly in Dar-Es Salaam, Dodoma, Arusha and Zanzibar.
Egypt`s first GSM operator launched its services in Cairo and elsewhere in October 1996 with infrastructures supplied by Alcatel. MobiNil, a private consortium, is expanding with further infrastructures from Alcatel and has reached over 2.2 million subscribers.
The Tunisian operator also selected Alcatel to supply a GSM infrastructure that is rapidly spreading across the country. Tunisia is known for the large numbers of visitors it attracts in particular from Europe. They now will be able to use their GSM phone from home on their business or holiday trips in this North African country.
For Tunisie Telecom, Alcatel also supplied and installed a GSM network that covered the Tunis sports infrastructures during the 14th edition of the Mediterranean Games, from 2 to 5 September. The network was deployed between June and August 2001 and covered all sports sites including the "November 7th" stadium in Rades, the athletic stadium, the swimming-pool, the Olympic village, the El Menzah football stadium, and the dome that hosted the basketball competitions. Thanks to the equipment supplied by Alcatel, more than 250 000 calls were made in the "November 7th" stadium during the opening ceremony with a 99% success ratio.
In Algeria, Alcatel and Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. have signed a contract for the delivery of a significant portion of a new nationwide GSM network. Valued at EUR 420 million, this contract is the first execution of the Global Frame Agreement signed between Orascom Telecom and Alcatel and is further enhancing their ongoing collaboration in the region. The network will be the largest-capacity network in Algeria. It will offer enhanced mobile data services to almost 3 million customers.
