The Western Cape Department has established a new ICT resource centre for educators.

Western Cape education MEC Donald Grant yesterday launched the centre, which the department says is for mobile education.

“The programme focuses on using ICT as a means for teaching and learning, and provides ICT skills training to teachers and unemployed youth.”

Connecting schools

The Department of Basic Education has partnered with mobile operator Vodacom to implement similar centres in each of the nine provinces.

The aim is to empower teachers with a variety of teaching resources, rich in multimedia content, according to the department.

Each ICT resource centre will offer a computer room with 50 computer terminals; other educational aids, models and content; connectivity; and training facilities.

The centres will have 200 schools linked to them for IT-based general teacher development.

The department adds that a further 20 schools will be selected for the maths and science programme. “The 20 maths and science schools will each be given a laptop with a zero-rated SIM card to enable free Internet access, a multimedia projector, and an interactive board.”
